Without a doubt, BMW is a company at one of the most important crossroads in its long history. In the last few years, BMW Group have realigned some of their key objectives in the future of their product line – namely a massive systems push under the EfficientDynamics umbrella along with improved safety and driving technologies. A new and potent blend of technology and efficiency to be coupled to the already enthusiastic driving dynamics expected from Munich. One gets the feeling that this major shift in product direction hasn’t been seen since likely the late 1980’s to early 1990’s when consumers saw a major shift in onboard systems when the 3, 5 and 7 Series transitioned from the E30, E28 and E23 to the E36, E34 and E32, respectively Many of these features and continued technological evolutions are what keep car buyers and enthusiasts coming back for each new generation of BMW. So what happens when you speed way over the legal speed limit? Nothing other than having your car taken away. Two Canadians tried this on their own by taking their 2008 Ferrari 430 Scuderia and an ‘08 BMW M6 to 200 km/h, roughly 126 mph, all done on a 60 km/h speed zone. Not only the speeding couple went over the limit, but they were also driving recklessly and almost hit a mother who was walking with two children. From here to having their car impounded was just a step away. To make an example out of them, the provincial government is taking things a step further.

Technically, the marmot is a squirrel, though it looks like the gopher that terrorised Bill Murray in the comedy classic Caddyshack. Hitting a marmot in an M3 GTS would be no laughing matter.

Europe’s largest auto group already encompasses Lamborghini , Bugatti and Bentley , is in the process of absorbing Porsche , and makes a couple more six-figure sports cars with Audi badges. But according to reports coming in from Europe, VW has its eyes set on acquiring yet another top-dollar automaker: Ferrari . Given that it already owns Maranello’s most direct competitor, you might be inclined to file this report in the “wild rumor of the day” category and be done with it. And while you’d certainly be justified, there’s a whole lot of eyebrow-raising statistics surrounding this report. Rival Fiat group has been looking for ways to raise capital to keep both itself and Chrysler going, and selling stake in Ferrari has been tipped as a possible avenue.

Plans for a Fiat-badged crossover based on a Chrysler-sourced platform have been confirmed for some time, but exactly what underpinnings would be used was open to speculation. The current platform, loosely based on the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class , can be modified to accommodate a variety of drivetrains and is currently being produced at the Jefferson North assembly plant in Detroit. Neither Fiat nor Marchionne have confirmed what kind of vehicle we can expect, but in addition to a Fiat crossover, there’s the strong possibility the Jeep’s platform could be used as the basis for a Maserati CUV. There are niche supercars from companies like a Spyker or Koenigsegg . Then there’s the Gillet Vertigo . One of the most bizarre sportscars on the market, the Vertigo is also one of the lightest and quickest on the road. The previous version of the Belgian exotic made by former racing driver Tony Gillet packed a 350-horsepower 3.0-liter V6 sourced from Alfa Romeo . Modest enough, but with a curb weight of only 990 kg (2,182 lbs), the Vertigo was capable of accelerating from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in a scant 3.26 seconds.

Of course when one team rises, others must fall. While teams like Ferrari and McLaren are still veritable forces to be reckoned with, others have fallen by the wayside – arguably none more emphatically than Williams. The team of Damon Hill, Nelson Piquet, Alain Prost, Nigel Mansell and Ayrton Senna; the team with nine constructors’ titles to its name and seven drivers’ championships; the team that once struck fear into the hearts of all challengers has long since fallen off its perch.

Emerging reports from the F1 paddock seem to paving the way for not one, but two teams under the Lotus – Renault banner. The development stems from Renault’s anticipated plan to scale back its F1 participation from full-fledged manufacturer team to engine supplier, like it was years ago. Renault recently sold the bulk of its F1 operation to Genii Capital, and if the automaker were to further downscale its involvement, Genii would be in the market for a new partner. According to reports, that partner could be Lotus. This is where it gets a little tricky. As you’re aware, the Lotus name is already on the grid, controversially licensed to a Malaysian team, which recently confirmed a deal to use Renault engines (and gearboxes from Red Bull, which also uses Renault engines) for next season
