Shortages for a few key critical elements forever While rare earth prices have skyrocketed higher over the last year, there should be “abundant supplies” of most rare earths around 2015 thanks to new mines according to some experts . Unfortunately, supplies of two rare earths commonly used in the motors found in electric and hybrid cars appear to be facing permanent shortages. Neodymium and dysprosium, according to experts, are destined to remain in short supply and largely controlled by China. Fortunately, a number of rare earth-free motors are in the works, but cost and performance issues still remain.

The company is showing off its brand new e Golf – sorry, Golf Blue-e-motion – to journalists in Wolfburg, Germany this week, and is making sure to remind us that it has made at least 20 plug-in or hybrid prototypes in the past four decades, from the Electric Transporter in 1973 to the Space Up! in 2007. Okay, the company may not bring an electric vehicle (EV) to market until 2013 – three years after Nissan and General Motors – but that doesn’t mean VW is really behind its competition. This is the company line, anyway, and VW just might have a point. The press release announcing the latest on the electric Golf , for example, says that, while the prototype vehicle gets around 100 miles of range today, the version that will be released in 2014, “is expected to be significantly improved with the battery technology used then.” That’s a real advantage, no? This appears to be VW’s game: make EVs at its own pace and try to get it right in a big way.

Filed under: Mitsubishi Mitsubishi Electric Corporation announced that it’s developed the world’s smallest and lightest motor controller unit for electric power steering systems in automobiles. This compact unit is claimed to be half the size and 70 percent the weight of the company’s current products. Despite its compact size, Mitsubishi Electric claims to have improved output power of its motor controller by roughly 30 percent through optimization of the electromagnetic design and an increase in the motor’s coil density. Nearly 40 percent of automobiles manufactured worldwide incorporate electric power steering, which can reduce fuel consumption by as much as five percent compared to a hydraulic system. Mitsubishi’s lightweight controller further improves the fuel savings and its compact dimensions should allow the automaker to install it in even the tightest of confines, like the small urban runabout we all know are coming. 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco Hybrids are a great way to max out on MPG, but a new breed of conventional gas-powered cars is promising 40 miles to the gallon—at least on the highway. The all-new Chevrolet Cruze Eco, in dealer showrooms mid-December, is one of those contenders. Official EPA numbers are not yet out but Chevrolet estimates the Cruze Eco will get 40 miles-per-gallon highway, and 27 in the city with the manual shifter. Car companies use words like “estimated” and “projected” when they are certain that fuel economy number(s) will be confirmed by the Environmental Protection Agency. In other words, at least 40 mpg highway will be on the new Cruze Eco window sticker. The six speed automatic version, however, has been certified by the EPA to achieve 36 mph highway fuel economy. As a global vehicle, the Cruze went on sale in Asia and parts of Europe in March 2009, and has already sold nearly 300,000 units in more than 60 countries

Electric cars a mid-to-long term solution Impacting US fleet won’t be easy A new study by the Boston Consulting Group contains some good news regarding alternative energy – some alternative energy sources could be viable market alternatives faster than many expect. In terms of electric cars, however, BCG is relatively inline with what most research has suggested: 5 – 10 percent penetration by 2020. Also, BCG warns that electric cars could lose their luster as an environmental solution. “If there is insufficient low-carbon power-generation infrastructure, EVs will struggle to be seen as a solution for reducing carbon emissions significantly.” Along those lines, BCG suggests that “off-shore wind and carbon capture and sequestration” technologies will probably be unsuccessful. However, advanced biofuels, on-shore wind energy and solar power seem headed for cost-effective viability, possibly within the decade. In fact, the BCG study suggests that biofuels could “significantly disrupt the status quo in fuel markets” if remaining obstacles are overcome, but EVs, the study warns, will have limited timely impact. Even under best case adoption scenarios through 2020, the time it takes to turn over the current fleet, otherwise known as the legacy effect, would require decades of new sales.

Hey, who hasn’t? While this assumption generally holds true, electrical rates vary widely across the nation and can throw off the numbers. In some instances, like when Inside Line ‘s engineering editor, Jason Kavanagh, drove the Chevrolet Volt out in sunny California, one discovers that operating a vehicle powered by electricity can indeed cost more than running it with the liquid fuel that pours from a pump. Kavanagh explained how he discovered that operating a Volt on electricity is not always as pocketbook-friendly as it may seem: During its time with us, our 2011 Chevy Volt tester consumed energy at the rate of 39.0 kilowatt-hours per 100 miles when in electric-only mode and averaged 31.1 mpg in gas engine assistance mode. We paid an average of $0.31 per kilowatt-hour of electricity and $3.31 per gallon of 91 octane swill, so the magic of arithmetic tells us that each one of the Volt’s miles driven on electricity cost us more money than if it’d simply consumed gasoline instead. That’s due in part to our high electricity rate – had our rate dropped to $0.24 per kilowatt-hour, we’d have reached parity on a cost-per-mile basis between electrons and dinosaurs.

Filed under: EV/Plug-in , On Two Wheels The image is crude and the website ain’t all that hot either, but Motion Dynamics Group’s Neltron Solar E-Bike, priced at $2,495, appears to be rather impressive. Motion Dynamics describes the Neltron as a pedal-assisted electric bike designed for flat-road applications. The Solar E-Bike is capable of hitting speeds of 20 miles per hour and boasts a range of 25 miles. Included in the $2,495 purchase price are two 60 watt solar panels, which the company claims will provide enough juice to charge the bike’s 48-volt 12 amp hour lead acid battery pack in just five hours. The Neltron features a 350-watt brushless hub motor, has a maximum load rating of 200 pounds and, Motion Dynamics claims, costs about a penny a mile to operate. A one hour, 480-watt solar charging system is optional, as is a lithium-ion battery pack, and if the sun’s power ain’t enough, then just plug the Neltron into any standard outlet, wait six hours and you’re ready to roll.

The company announced today it will be ordering 15,000 electric vehicles for itself and partner with its fleet customers to get an additional 10,000 on the road by 2015. First on the list? The Chevy Volt . 12,000 of them. Yes, we know that technically the Volt is not a “pure” electric, but considering the dent these vehicles will put in total gasoline usage, we won’t quibble.

This brute is powered by a liquid-cooled 240 kW AC induction motor and is said to provide class-leading low-end torque that makes it a perfect fit for off-highway applications like hauling around trailers and containers at Ford Motor Company ‘s Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, MI. Balqon Corporation, in collaboration with T&K Logistics, Inc., is the manager of on-site transportation at Ford’s Michigan Assembly Plant and will provide ten XE20 electric yard tractors to handle heavy-hauling duties at the Wayne facility. The zero-emissions tractor is based on the Xspotter by Autocar . The automaker’s first wave of electric C30s are tooling around Sweden , but those are prototype units. The production version, slated for launch to the public in 2013, will undergo a refining process that will apparently lead to a finished product that Volvo chief executive officer Stefan Jacoby claims will “set the standard in the industry.” Part of the refining process for the plug-in C30 involves selecting an electric drive supplier, and for that vital bit of hardware, Volvo has turned to the experts at Getrag. Volvo’s battery-powered C30 will be fitted with Getrag’s 1eDT240 electric drive unit . The 1eDT240 is Getrag’s top-of-the-line single-motor drive unit with maximum power output listed at 82 kW (110 horsepower) and torque at a healthy 162 pound-feet. When designing the 1eDT240, Getrag focused on noise-optimized gearing and efficiency.

Jie spoke of Shenzhen entering a “mature” development period and said that the city, after 30 years of rapid growth, is now ready for a low-carbon future: The city is trying to become more low-carbon through expanding public transportation, constructing environment-friendly buildings, lowering investments in energy-consuming sectors, and encouraging residents to live and consume in a low-carbon way. Jie explained that, on the automotive front, Shenzhen will have charging stations installed across the city and that they will lay the foundation for the adoption of battery-powered vehicles. The vice-mayor insists that the number of registered EVs citywide will hit – ready for this? – 35,000 within three years. With the aid of a $24.6-million grant from the DOE under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and the company providing $25-plus million in additional funds, BASF’s facility in Elyria, OH will undergo a $50-plus million renovation that will transform it into a li-ion cathode production mega plant. The plant is scheduled to come online in 2012 and will produce li-ion battery materials for both hybrid and electric vehicles. With the aid of a $24.6-million grant from the DOE under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and the company providing $25-plus million in additional funds, BASF’s facility in Elyria, OH will undergo a $50-plus million renovation that will transform it into a li-ion cathode production mega plant. The plant is scheduled to come online in 2012 and will produce li-ion battery materials for both hybrid and electric vehicles. Filed under: EV/Plug-in , Zap Remy Electric Motors, the Pendleton, IN-based automotive supplier, has been selected by Zap , a California-based electric vehicle producer, to supply motors for all of the automaker’s cars and trucks sold across the globe. Remy’s HVH 250 electric motor – the one Steve Burns, president of Advanced Mechanical Products, Inc. (AMP), once called “the best (electric motor) on the market today” – will find a home between the fenders of every Zap vehicle produced from here on out. Remy’s patented High Voltage Hairpin (HVH) technology is said to deliver world-class torque and power density, attributes which could add some needed pep and range to Zap’s electric vehicle lineup. Remy HVH motors can also be found in vehicles produced by AMP, General Motors , Mercedes-Benz and BMW . Remy and ZAP announced the long-term motor supply deal at the 25th World Electric Vehicle Symposium and Exposition (EVS 25) in Shenzhen, China. Additionally, Zap disclosed that it’s developing a drivetrain featuring the HVH 250 motor for use in several Chinese-built autos

Musk keeps investors interested Tesla stock up after big losses Despite losing $34.9 million last quarter, Tesla reported better than expected results, causing its stock to jump 14.3 percent. Sitting at $28.15 per share, Tesla stock is now 60 up percent from its IPO offering of $17 a  share according to the DetroitNews . In a conference call, according to Straightline , CEO Elon Musk said that short-term profitability “is not a particularly meaningful goal because we’re spending on the order of half a billion dollars over the next nine quarters. So you can expect to see some fairly significant expenses there. It’s really the only way to execute the business given that we’re going from roughly 600 units a year to roughly 20,000 units a year.” Ironically, or maybe not, that 1/2 billion in upcoming spending is almost exactly the amount of money the government loaned Tesla. So, it’s a good thing investors continue to remain upbeat, even optimistic, because if Tesla fails, it’s taxpayers that will be left picking up this $500 million tab.

As most drivers know, oil loses its lubricating properties and friction reducing components gradually over time, and you thus need to replace the slick substance every X thousand miles. In the case of the Chevrolet Volt , a vehicle that may, in the hands of a short-commute driver, only occasionally fire up its engine, oil change intervals could be extended to a max of two years. GM’s executive director of electric vehicles, Mickey Bly, explained the Volt’s oil change cycle to the GM-Volt.com crew like this: We have adapted our patented oil life monitor to the Volt’s unique operating conditions and its interactions with the engine oil quality. We have added a maximum calendar life of 2 years as a cap on the oil life…so that would be the maximum period before an oil change is needed. By using the oil life monitor it insures the customer will optimize the engine performance and be notified if an oil change is needed. As we learn more about the Volt in field usage, we may increase that cap

(HPD) division. In a separate post, we also told you Mission Motors was launching a high performance components division called MissionEVT . Turns out, these two items were intimately related. An eagle-eyed reader tipped us off that one of the things that made this pair of these performance-oriented Honda machines so, well, performance oriented, was the presence of some carbon fiber-covered tech from a certain San Francisco-based company. According to Honda, with the help of “…a turbocharger and upgraded IMA hybrid system,” the modded drivetrain puts out an estimated combined 200 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque.
