The Japanese Prime Minister, Kan Naoto, is presenting Japan’s Good Design Grand Award today to the Honda CR-Z sporty hybrid. This follows yesterday’s news that the CR-Z was named the 2011 winner of Japan’s prestigious Car Of The Year award. These honors punctuate a triumphant first year for the CR-Z, in which the hybrid greatly surpassed sales expectations in Japan and enjoyed an overwhelmingly positive reception in its home country. In March 2010, its first month on the Japanese market, the CR-Z moved more than 10,000 units—10 times Honda’s monthly sales target for the vehicle. Meanwhile, back in the United States—where the CR-Z was released this summer—critics have been rough on the vehicle, with most complaining that it lacks performance or fuel efficiency, or both. The CR-Z offers 122 horsepower and average fuel economy rating of 37 mpg. Depending on your slant, it’s true the CR-Z isn’t the most fuel-efficient hybrid out there, or the sportiest subcompact

It separates itself from other electric bikes both visually and functionally with its eight-inch-wide tubeless tires that are perfect for gliding over sand. At the highest of its 14 gears, the vehicle can reach speeds of up to 20 miles per hour on its own, but it can go faster when assisted by the rider with a little pedal power. As Kane Fortune of Fortune Hanebrink told Gizmag : The motor is geared through the bicycle gearing so we recommend some pedaling to shift gears if you are looking to achieve the maximum speed from the motor. Power shifting is possible though because it is a bicycle we recommend pedaling through a gear shift. As long as you are in the correct bicycle gear, your pedaling will always allow you to add speed with just minor effort. In a great pedal rhythm, riders can reach speeds up to 35 mph.

Call it a naked sport bike, a power-cruiser or everything you need and nothing you don’t – no matter what the nomenclature, Honda made a performance motorcycle that happened to look great when it hit the showrooms wearing nothing more than absolutely necessary. Honda announced that it will once again spare the nonsense and give the American market a naked sportbike known as the CB1000R, packing 998cc of inline four power. Honda calls it also “surprisingly versatile,” with a broad powerband and roomy cockpit. We shouldn’t forget fun either, as the big CB will put down 124 horsepower and 74l pound-feet of twist. Modern amenities to include a fully adjustable 43mm inverted fork and four-piston radial mounted calipers clamping a rotor on each side up front. We are not sure if it was nostalgia , or loss of market share that ultimately landed the CB1000R on U.S soil, but at this point, it looks like Honda may be remembering who pays for their motorcycles..

Filed under: Motorcycle 2011 Aprilia Tuono V4R – Click above for high-res image gallery It takes a lot to make a term like “naked” any sexier, but Aprilia has managed to do exactly that with its latest “naked bike,” the new Tuono V4R. A beast of a machine (that looks sort of like an insect), the Tuono is based on the RSV4, but ditches the bodywork for a two-kilogram weight savings and a better view of the 1000cc DOHC V4 engine, which produces 162 horsepower and 81 pound-feet of tire-smoking torque. But the Tuono isn’t just about grunt. In fact, it’s one of the most sophisticated naked bikes on the market, and it’s coming to the United States towards the end of next year. Keeping all the twist and shout in check are the Aprilia Performance Ride Control and advanced traction control systems. The PRC is a three-position wheelie control system with programmable launch control that employs more accelerometers and gyroscopes than an Apple Store, allowing a little wheelspin out of the corners and offering eight modes that are adjustable right from the handlebars. The traction control, meanwhile, can automatically optimize itself according to the tires you’ve fitted.

The Blue Oval handed out keys to Funkmaster Flex and Team Baurtwell, Galpin Auto Sports and CGS Performance Products, with each group providing a unique take on the Ford’s new crossover. Funkmaster Flex and his Team Baurtwell crew approached the Explorer with the idea of making it into an urban utility vehicle. Besides the obvious exterior and interior upgrades, Funkmaster Flex has packed this example with a complete Sony Xplod audio setup – a real treat for serious audiophiles. Galpin Auto Sports designed its Explorer as a full-on luxury crossover. A leather-trimmed headliner has a central section of suede running the length of the ceiling, and that dual-texture styling is replicated in the seats. For second row passengers, an iPad pops out of the console, able to operate in either portrait or landscape mode while docked.

Simply put, there is no simpler way of getting through crowded city streets, and let’s face it: city streets are only getting more crowded. With that in mind, BMW – one of the few automakers that builds four-wheeled vehicles as well as two – has unveiled its vision for the next generation of large motor scooters, which it calls Concept C. Drawing on decades of experience building full-size motorcycles, BMW Motorrad has delved into the scooter market with a fresh concept that brings familiar design cues from its existing lineup of off-road, touring and sport bikes to a commuter form. In short, BMW is “expanding its present motorcycle adventure world to include the big scooter.” Their words, not ours. Instead of reinventing the wheel as other companies have tried, the Concept C is powered by a conventional two-cylinder engine mated to a continuously-variable transmission, although consideration is being given to future electric powertrains

An entire high-resolution image gallery of the 2011 Triumph Tiger 800 and 800 XC has found its way online, and everything is exactly as we suspected. The Tiger is also (surprise, surprise) very reminiscent of the BMW F 800 GS , which will be Triumph’s main competition in this particular segment niche. Triumph’s hopeful ace in the hole will be its trademark triple engine, measuring 800cc in this case. According to leaked documentation , this mill is a stroked version of the much-loved 675cc inline-three used in Triumph’s small-bore sport bikes. Figure around 100 horsepower and a nice, flat torque curve peaking at about 70 pound-feet. With an expected weight in the 440-pound range, the Tiger’s power-to-weight ratio should crucially be just a bit better than the aforementioned Beemer.

Filed under: Motorcycle Honda V4 Adventure Concept Sketch – Click above for high-res image gallery Honda has given the interwebs a quick look at what we can expect from the front of the company’s V4 Adventure Concept slated to be unveiled in Milan. Judging by the teaser, it looks like the bike will boast a narrower profile compared to its VFR cousin, helping keep the engine cool and things from going squirrely should the rider decide to visit the upper registers of the speedometer. Additionally, Asphalt and Rubber reports the bike may not pack the same behemoth 1200cc mill as the current VFR as initially believed. Instead, Honda may opt for a smaller engine to keep weight down – think something in the 800cc range. The company has also indicated that the V4 Adventure Concept will carry floating gauges akin to what’s found in the sport bike crowd in order to help keep the rider’s eyes forward. That fits in line with word that Honda still intends this concept to me more of a soft roader and less of a true adventure warrior. Behold the VFR Adventure Concept – a 1200cc behemoth designed to cater to those who like the style of dual-sport tourer but loathe the notion of actually heading off of the beaten path. Think more along the lines of the Ducati Multistrada than the KTM 990 Adventure. As of right now, details are remarkably scarce about what to expect from the machine, though some seem to think that the bike will likely show up as a 2012 production model. So what does the VFR Adventure bring to the table over the current VFR ? From what we can see, it looks like riders can expect a slightly taller stance with more ground clearance and a skimpier fairing, but not much else. Honda has been pretty tricky about letting this one out of the bag, keeping news of the concept to its European press site.

Filed under: Motorcycle Triumph Tiger 800 XC – Click above to enlarge Back in the day, the British were known for being a nation of ready-and-willing explorers, and somewhat similar expressions could be made of their motorcycles. Sadly, Jolly Ole’ England’s once impressive two-wheeled heritage very nearly vanished as quickly as all those headline-grabbing expeditions to the ends of the Earth. At least one storied British motorcycling brand hasn’t forgotten its heritage, as the revived Triumph has seen fit to launch a new adventure touring mount for 2011 called the Tiger 800. As we’ve mentioned before , two versions of the machine will be available, one meant for off-road excursions dubbed the XC and one biased for the road. Triumph has finally let loose an official shot of the Tiger 800 XC, and we generally like what we see. There’s a 21-inch front wheel with spokes and knobby tires, bash guards and mud-catching fenders.

While machines such as the Monster , Multistrada , Hypermotard and Sport Classic series weren’t made to represent the brand in competition, they still have plenty of racetrack-derived heritage oozing from their pores. The Diavel, on the other hand, isn’t likely to ever even sniff a track. Unless perhaps that track is, oh, about a quarter-mile long and straight as an arrow. While the Italian motorcycle manufacturer isn’t keen on offering too much in the way of a category for the new Diavel, we’re thinking it will most likely be cross-shopped with pavement pounders like the Yamaha Vmax , Suzuki B-King and Harley-Davidson’s liquid-cooled VRSC series. As far as specs, here’s what we know so far: ABS, Ducati Traction Control and Ducati Riding Modes that alter power output and delivery will at least be available, if not standard.
