Honda CR-Z Is Award-Winner in Japan, Dissed in U.S.

The Japanese Prime Minister, Kan Naoto, is presenting Japan’s Good Design Grand Award today to the Honda CR-Z sporty hybrid. This follows yesterday’s news that the CR-Z was named the 2011 winner of Japan’s prestigious Car Of The Year award. These honors punctuate a triumphant first year for the CR-Z, in which the hybrid greatly surpassed sales expectations in Japan and enjoyed an overwhelmingly positive reception in its home country. In March 2010, its first month on the Japanese market, the CR-Z moved more than 10,000 units—10 times Honda’s monthly sales target for the vehicle. Meanwhile, back in the United States—where the CR-Z was released this summer—critics have been rough on the vehicle, with most complaining that it lacks performance or fuel efficiency, or both. An entire high-resolution image gallery of the 2011 Triumph Tiger 800 and 800 XC has found its way online, and everything is exactly as we suspected. The Tiger is also (surprise, surprise) very reminiscent of the BMW F 800 GS , which will be Triumph’s main competition in this particular segment niche. Triumph’s hopeful ace in the hole will be its trademark triple engine, measuring 800cc in this case. According to leaked documentation , this mill is a stroked version of the much-loved 675cc inline-three used in Triumph’s small-bore sport bikes. Figure around 100 horsepower and a nice, flat torque curve peaking at about 70 pound-feet. With an expected weight in the 440-pound range, the Tiger’s power-to-weight ratio should crucially be just a bit better than the aforementioned Beemer.

Filed under: Motorcycle Triumph Tiger 800 XC – Click above to enlarge Back in the day, the British were known for being a nation of ready-and-willing explorers, and somewhat similar expressions could be made of their motorcycles. Sadly, Jolly Ole’ England’s once impressive two-wheeled heritage very nearly vanished as quickly as all those headline-grabbing expeditions to the ends of the Earth. At least one storied British motorcycling brand hasn’t forgotten its heritage, as the revived Triumph has seen fit to launch a new adventure touring mount for 2011 called the Tiger 800. As we’ve mentioned before , two versions of the machine will be available, one meant for off-road excursions dubbed the XC and one biased for the road. Triumph has finally let loose an official shot of the Tiger 800 XC, and we generally like what we see. There’s a 21-inch front wheel with spokes and knobby tires, bash guards and mud-catching fenders.

BMW’s New K1600 Models Push The Motorcycle Technology Envelope

Someone once defined a motorcycle as “two wheels, a motor and a little bit of chrome”. Obviously, BMW didn’t get that memo, since their latest touring and sport touring bikes are a rolling testament to wretched excess. Let’s start with the motor, where BMW adopted a “if four is good, six is better” philosophy. The K1600GT Sport Tourer and the K1600GTL Luxury Tourer now come with a 1,600cc inline six cylinder motor, which uses a narrow bore and long stroke to achieve a width of just 22 inches. The motor produces 160 horsepower (at 7,500 RPM) and 129 ft lb of torque (at 5,000 RPM), so two-up riding, even with luggage, should be a non-issue. The amount of technology on the new Ks is impressive and even a bit frightening. On the motor side, the ECU has a three position fuel map similar to what Aprilia uses on the Dorsoduro and Shiver. A rider can choose from “Road”, which blends performance and fuel economy; “Rain”, which reduces power and delays throttle response; and “Dynamic”, which sacrifices fuel economy for the best performance. As you’d expect, the new Ks come standard with ABS and traction control is an available option. Like BMW’s automobiles, the new K bikes offer adaptive headlights, which correct for both lean angle and cornering. An electronically adjustable suspension, like the one offered on BMW’s GS series, is an available option. A full color TFT display allows riders to monitor trip computer data, motorcycle setup data, audio and communications data and (presumably) navigation data. With so many menus to scroll through, BMW has included a “Multi-Controller” similar to the iDrive found in their automobiles. Call me paranoid, but I see this as a really, really bad idea: how many K bikes will get written off because the owner was navigating a menu when he should have been watching traffic? Call me a Luddite, but all this technology just means there’s plenty more to go wrong. When something does, what are the chances you’ll be fixing it by the side of the road with a roll of Gorilla tape and a multi-tool? “Slim to none” would be my guess, and even my ’04 BMW K1200RS is unnecessarily complex in a lot of ways (like the servo assisted, linked ABS, for example). Still, someone has to pioneer advances in technology, and BMW has been particularly good at doing so on two wheels over the past few years. These new K bikes aren’t for everyone, but I’m sure BMW will have no problem in selling all they import. Those of us who ride motorcycles are always looking for the latest and greatest on two wheels. You see like the automobiles that we all know and love the motorcycle also evolves over time and with each new innovation the performance gets better and better. I recently wrote an article on MINI’s new all electric concept runabout, the eScoot. It’s small and would most likely do great around town and in urban areas. What if however you wanted something with a bit more in the way of performance and a lot more in the way of looks? Right now your options are a big fat “0″ but if a certain industrial designer from Italy has anything to say about it, we may just be in luck. Paolo De Giusti, the mastermind behind this concept wants the bike not only to be efficient, but utilize new shared battery technology. Below is a statement from Paolo De Giusti on why his concept could in fact become a reality. Keep in mind when you read this that his English is somewhat broken, his point however comes across loud and clear. One big problem of Electric bikes is the time to recharge the battery. With a system of shared battery, a standard battery is recharged in an Automatic Robot Station (Used also by Cars ) and you can mount another identical battery load 100% and pay only for the used energy (remaining battery energy is reused). With this system you can keep the old network of petrol stations, furthermore, the battery in the new electric vehicles is comparable to a conventional engine, I mean that the performance of Motorcycle derived mostly from the battery and not from the engine, so every time you will have a technological evolution of these batteries these can be used also in “old” motorcycle to improve performance, in this way you can save your vehicle from a fast obsolescence. Now, the sleuthy eyes over at Visordown.com noticed that the 2011 edition of the Speed Triple – arguably the bike that is most responsible for the factory streetfighter’s recent popularity – is being showcased in Triumph’s own accessory catalog. As before, the next edition will use a version of Triumph’s well-loved 1050cc three-cylinder engine, which is expected to pump out more power than ever before. We’re also expecting Triumph to reduce the weight of its naked triple by nearly 40 pounds, further boosting performance.

The global power sports market may be in the dumper, but segments within the market are still hot. Take, for example, adventure bikes, which are the modern equivalent of the old “universal Japanese motorcycle” concept. You can tour on them, strafe canyons on them and even take them up the occasional fire road without unnecessary drama. Adventure bikes have become the Swiss Army knives of the motorcycle world, and many riders are using them to pare down the number of bikes they own. For years, BMW has owned the market with their boxer-motored R1100/1150/1200 GS bikes, which really do work well in all environments.

We had Covered the Yamaha FZ-16 earlier but it wasn’t as cool as this Cool Carbon Fiber Bike by the Triumph.

The Speed Triple Bike which has been Dominating the class for over a decade and is truly the ultimate, hard as nails street fighter Bike and the Triumph has has now given up yet another reason to get this marvelous Bike. They have added the following additions to the Triumph Speed Triple Bike:

Carbon fiber fly screen

Carbon fiber cowl

Carbon fiber infill panels

Carbon fiber heat shield

Carbon fiber front mudguard

Carbon fiber sprocket cover

Black chunky handlebars

Anodised Mirrors

If you are not familliar with the Triumph Speed Triple Bike, it is a 1050cc triple engine delivering 130 bhp, while twin Brembo 4-piston 4-pad radial calipers, fully adjustable black anodised Showa USD forks and fully adjustable Showa monoshock rear suspension completes the sports bike spec. Only 55 Bikes of this Limited Edition are available and each one costs about $11,800 over the cost of the bike.
