German equivalent of AAA, ADAC, publishes their second annual AutoMarxX brand study which consists of individual criteria, brand image, market strength, customer satisfaction, product strength, environmental performance and safety. It thus provides an overall picture of current performance levels of the leading car brands. While in May 2010 , BMW was recognized as the leading brand, now the Munich-based automaker falls on the third spot, behind Mercedes-Benz and Audi. Eight times in a row, Mercedes was denied at the top of the podium, but the Stuttgart-based company takes the top spot in the ADAC brand AutoMarxX investigation. Volkswagen (rank 4) and Volvo (Rank 5) have each improved by one place, while Skoda falls back to sixth. Porsche (Rank 7) swaps places with Toyota.

Yet another BMW 1 Series M Coupe test drive review surfaces, but this time, reported by a professional driving instructor and an E30 M3 owner, the same vehicle many believe it is the predecessor of the 1M. M3 Adjuster of 1addicts shares a valuable and very insightful review of the new baby-M and we’re quite ecstatic about the things he had to share. “My application details included my history with BMW CCA, where I am a lifetime member, having joined the club in 1993 when I purchased my first E30 M3. I have been very active with BMW CCA, beginning with autocross in 1994, my first driving event in 1997, moving up to instructor in 2001, and I currently am the Chief Driving instructor and President of my local chapter. I have attended six Oktoberfest events across the United States, and driven on over a dozen race circuits in the US, and I still autocross competitively monthly. My experience on track includes E36 M3, E46 M3, E92 M3, 335, a few Porsche 911 variants, Mazda Miata, and of course I have traveled around in the passenger seat of many vehicles while instructing. I currently still own a track prepped E30- M3, and like many E30 M3 owners, have been hoping to see BMW produce a performance car with similar characteristics as the E30… lightness, superior handling, and incredible agility.

The Food Chain “it’s not a real BMW” seems to be a common statement by many Bimmer enthusiasts when it comes to the smaller horsepower engines of the BMW line-up. This phrase seems typical of web forums and comments on articles when discussing a comparison of something like a 535i versus a 550i or 328i to 335i. The whole argument seems to imply a false sense of importance by owners of BMW’s with larger engines over those of the entry model of a series. As if buying a 328i makes you less of a true driver with a car that somehow has far less “BMW-mess” than it’s faster sibling. It’s true, more power is typically better but that doesn’t make the lower output models any less of a driver’s car. This general perception of say, the naturally aspirated BMW’s versus forced induction BM’s, is typically a sign of someone who doesn’t “get” the brand. The 128i 'vert: Good on back roads and in town However, there is one car that seems to be the biggest whipping boy of all when it comes to being perceived as a “lesser Bimmer” and that’s the 128i in the U.S.

Top Gear publishes the best BMW M3 GTS review we have seen to date. No further ado is needed, the article will speak for itself. Here is an excerpt: Animals and cars don’t mix. Muntjacs – a doe-eyed but truly devious deer – have a habit of wandering into the roads round my way, and you really don’t want to collect one of those at 70mph. Here, 7,500ft up the Austrian Alps on the infamous Grossglockner Pass, the warning signs feature something apparently cuddlier: the marmot. Technically, the marmot is a squirrel, though it looks like the gopher that terrorised Bill Murray in the comedy classic Caddyshack. Hitting a marmot in an M3 GTS would be no laughing matter.

The next evolution of the 911 will be launched at next year’s Frankfurt auto show—and we’ve got details. While wicked, high-power variants of the 997-gen Porsche 911 have appeared with increasing frequency over the past couple of years, the base car is now due for a major redesign. The next iteration, which is known internally as the 991, will get lighter and even sportier, and will in fact be the first entirely new 911 since the model switched from the air-cooled 993 to the water-cooled 996 for 1998. The 996 later morphed into the cosmetically altered 997, and another face lift in 2008 masked major technical changes: Two years ago, the Carrera and Carrera S got entirely new engines and an optional dual-clutch transmission, which replaced the torque-converter automatic. Filed under: Volkswagen , Ferrari , Rumormill If Volkswagen has taught us anything, it’s that you can never be too rich or have too many high-dollar automakers under your umbrella. Europe’s largest auto group already encompasses Lamborghini , Bugatti and Bentley , is in the process of absorbing Porsche , and makes a couple more six-figure sports cars with Audi badges. But according to reports coming in from Europe, VW has its eyes set on acquiring yet another top-dollar automaker: Ferrari . Given that it already owns Maranello’s most direct competitor, you might be inclined to file this report in the “wild rumor of the day” category and be done with it. And while you’d certainly be justified, there’s a whole lot of eyebrow-raising statistics surrounding this report. Rival Fiat group has been looking for ways to raise capital to keep both itself and Chrysler going, and selling stake in Ferrari has been tipped as a possible avenue.

Filed under: Spy Photos , Coupe , Performance , Porsche Porsche 911 spy shots – Click above for high-res image gallery We recently spied two next-generation Porsche 911 prototypes out testing, showing off its slightly revised shape and new exterior features. We can only imagine what sort of rigorous testing procedures are involved with creating a new 911, so it doesn’t surprise us to see the the almost-naked Porsche back out on the road again. Mum’s the word on exactly what lies underneath the 911′s new skin, though earlier reports have stated that the 3.6- and 3.8-liter flat-sixes will carry over unchanged, though a new electro-hydraulic steering could be on hand in an effort to improve overall efficiency. We’ve heard rumblings about more spacious rear seats and an electronic parking brake being fitted to the new 911, as well. We expect Porsche to take the wraps off of the new 911 sometime early next year, possibly at March’s Geneva Motor Show . Filed under: LA Auto Show , Coupe , Performance , Porsche 2010 Porsche Cayman – Click above for high-res image gallery Porsche has officially announced its plans to reveal a “mid-engined sports car” next week at the Los Angeles Auto Show , in addition to showing off its latest crop of 911 models – the GTS and Speedster . It might sound vague, but we’re placing bets that the German automaker’s big reveal is the much-rumored Cayman Clubsport , a sort of “hardtop Boxster Spyder .” According to earlier reports, the Cayman CS will be motivated by the automaker’s 3.4-liter flat-six, with power expected to be around 333 horsepower. Much like its Boxster kin, the Clubsport’s main objective will be lightness, with sources saying that anywhere from 162 to 184 pounds will be shed from the stock Cayman S body. This means things like fabric door pulls, aluminum body components and lightweight alloy wheels will be on hand, keeping the Clubsport focused on being a nimble, spirited track day queen. What Bentley is asking you to do with the 2011 Continental GT is block out all the pink-over-white-quilted-leather GTCs you’ve seen on TMZ and all the murdered-out, 24-inch-rim-wearing Supersports at the SEMA show, and instead think of its coupe as a timeless icon of ultra-refined performance. In its bid for immortality, the Continental GT changes very little for its first full makeover in seven years, as its bodywork—a bit crisper, a bit wider, and a bit more wide-eyed—evolves at a decidedly Porsche 911–like crawl.
